Papers, 1962-1976.

The collection consists of papers from Chafee's tenure as Governor (1966-68) and Secretary of the Navy (1969-72) as well as from his unsuccessful 1972 campaign for the U.S. Senate. Chafee's Senatorial papers are contained in Mss. Gr. no. 115, also held by the University of Rhode Island Special Collections. Papers from his time as Navy Secretary do not include official correspondence or documents. Gaps exist from his three terms as Governor. Materials include: correspondence; speeches and addresses; memoranda; appointments files; legislative bills passed through the R.I. Assembly (1966); gubernatorial (1962, 1964, 1966,1968) and senatorial (1972) campaign records including files of Chafee's campaign aides Arthur David Levin and Richmond Viall containing news releases, newspaper clippings, advertising, voter lists and financial records; personal correspondence and records from the period between his failed bid for the Senate in 1972 and his successful senatorial race of 1976; photographs; scrapbooks; films; video tapes; audio tapes; and miscellaneous three dimensional memorabilia. Of particular interest are the extensive research files done on Sen. Claiborne Pell, Chafee's opponent in 1972, which consist of news clips, excerpts from the Congressional Record with statements by or votes of Pell, copies of bills sponsored by Pell and notes made on his position on various topics.
